Kansas City pianist Eddie Moore's "What Makes Us," released in 2025, is a conversation, not just jazz. Moore, along with Ben Tervort on bass and Jaylen Ward on drums. This release is a reminder that Kansas City has some heat and continues to be a vibrant hub for exceptional jazz music, showcasing the talent and innovation of artists like Eddie Moore. Reminiscent of a painter who occasionally steps outside the lines, then turns those “mistakes” into something beautiful. Moore crafts music that feels both spontaneous and deeply intentional. That is what listeners get from this trio's tracks, such as 'In the Kitchen' that is lifted with the sound of the electric bass, showing that the shimmering tones don’t just decorate the track, they season it, adding a pinch of LA’s vibe on a summer's night to Kansas City’s soul. Vibraphonist Isaiah Petrie really shines on 'Familiarities'. You can hear Isaiah Petrie’s bright, metallic tones with Moore's rich piano notes. It proves that jazz is strengthened when generations share the spotlight. Eddie Moore's cover of Snoh Aalegra’s ‘I Want You Around’ is so beautifully done. It can be described as a beautiful love story, the way it comes together. This album is truly a great listen, a reminder that music should feel human, not flawless. Eddie Moore and his trio remind us that living in the spaces between perfection and the wrong note leads to a better idea. Posted by Karina Soriano
