Beyond the beat: The story behind “Life Smells Good”

Some records transport you instantly, windows down, cruising through LA on a perfect summer day, that California breeze hitting just right. "Life Smells Good," the new collaborative single from Butch Cassidy, Blu, Peruvian Black and Executive Producer, A&R, and co-producer, PRO, is exactly that kind of record.

But the journey beyond the beat is anything but typical.

"I was just floating through some tracks one day from Peruvian Black," Amilcar "PRO" Welton explained during our recent conversation. "This one instrumental... it felt like being outside in SoCal, right? It instantly gave me that spark, like hearing a classic DJ Battlecat beat."

That initial spark set off a four-month creative process that would bring together some of West Coast hip-hop's most respected names and it all started with a single vision.

For PRO, there were only two voices he could hear on that production: the late Nate Dogg or Butch Cassidy. Through mutual connections, he reached out to Butch with a specific vision, something clean, vibey and motivational, but not preachy.

"I wanted something really about just moving through life day-to-day, right? Just feeling good about yourself," PRO said. "You've got reasons to celebrate."

Butch delivered exactly that, laying down a hook so smooth it became the foundation for everything that followed. When he added a verse, PRO knew immediately it was staying on the track.

"It just rides," he said. "This made me want to buy a new chop top or something, like a '64 Lincoln Continental."

Here is where Blu entered the picture, with Butch's melodic West Coast touch locked in, PRO knew the record needed an MC who could match that energy without falling into gangster rap clichés. Through community tastemaker and MC, Definite Mass, he connected with Blu and what came back exceeded every expectation.

"When I tell you Blu sent that verse back, I was like...I don't know how to take it," PRO recalled, laughing. "The verse was so dope, I almost felt like I irritated Blu, and then he was like, 'I'ma show PRO how I get down.'"

Whether it was competitive spirit or pure inspiration from Peruvian Black's production, Blu's verse elevated the track to another level entirely.

What separates a good record from a great one? According to PRO, it's all in the details the small touches that most listeners might not consciously notice but definitely feel.

After additional creative direction on the drum soundscape from long time collaborator Charles "CLC2" Coleman II (Houston, TX), PRO brought in Santiago Luna from Cutie Brothers Studios (Las Vegas, NV) to add live drums under Peruvian Black's programming. Bay Area musician Ron Scott Jr. laid down that essential West Coast funky bass. Singer Sativa (San Diego, CA) contributed a sultry outro ear candy. Eastwood (Compton, CA) added vocal layers with Butch. Every element was carefully considered, placed and refined.

"These are the things that make somebody like Kanye, when he's not tripping, a genius," PRO explained. "The Quincy Joneses, those people that oversaw major records, it's those details that add up."

Even the mixing process became an opportunity to invest in emerging talent. Instead of going with an expensive established engineer, PRO took a chance on young and gifted engineer Toryon Kelley at Junction Sound in Las Vegas, a decision that paid off.

In an era dominated by AI-generated imagery, PRO made a deliberate choice: commission original artwork from local Las Vegas artist Sara Godbout.

"When you're doing it with AI, it's not your intellectual property," he noted. "I want something that was original, that we own as a master owner."

Working from a '70s album cover concept and photos of the collaborators, Godbout spent three weeks digitally painting the cover from scratch no AI, just layers and revisions on an iPad.

"Who's gonna take an AI-generated artwork as a poster?" PRO asked. "Who's gonna want that in their office or room or garage or home studio? Nobody."

"Life Smells Good" isn't just a throwback, it's a real reminder that West Coast music never really left, it just needed the right people to honor it properly.

The title itself came from a moment of reflection. While Butch was literally singing about smelling good, PRO saw something deeper.

"People are, you know, we all have sensitive noses," he said. "That's part of our joy if someone smells good or if food smells good. Even the Cali breeze has a smell. I was like, man, life smells good."

It's an affirmation disguised as a flex, positivity wrapped in that signature West Coast cool. And in a music landscape often dominated by aggression and excess, that message feels revolutionary.

For PRO, it's a labor of love that sets a new standard for his future collaborative work.

"I'm definitely proud of this record," he said simply.

And he should be. In a world that often feels like it's moving too fast, "Life Smells Good" is a reminder to slow down, roll the windows down and appreciate the ride.

Because sometimes, life really does smell good.

"Life Smells Good" featuring Butch Cassidy, Blu and Peruvian Black, and PRO, is on all streaming and social platforms.

Just three days after its release, Creed Chameleon and JoJo Flow are making waves with their collaborative project Accolades, a well-crafted 11-track album that showcases the duo's honest chemistry and versatility.

Released on June 22nd, Accolades wastes no time establishing its real intent. The title track Accolades opens the project with a statement of staying focused on one's mission, before diving into "1UP," a showcase of the duo's spirit and lyrical prowess you can succeed despite the odds, acknowledging that their goals might be a "long shot" but they will take what they have and move forward.

What sets Accolades apart is its impressive roster of featured artists. The album's centerpiece, "New WAV Outlawz," feels like a mission statement, bringing together multiple voices to declare their place in hip-hop's evolving landscape.

Behind the boards, Josiah Kamohoalii Bulatao handles production duties across all tracks, creating a cohesive sonic palette that allows both Creed Chameleon and JoJo Flow to shine. The production strikes a balance between contemporary trap influences and boom-bap.

Tracks like "Iyo Sky" and "Downtown Love" (featuring A Ron) showcase the duo's ability to craft melodic, accessible hip-hop without sacrificing lyrical substance, while cuts like "Let Me Talk" featuring Bxmbz and KennFrancis bring raw energy and competitive bars.

There's no filler here, just real focused, intentional hip-hop that proves Creed Chameleon and JoJo Flow are earning their place in the conversation.
