We burned Milli Vanilli at the stake, stripped them of their medals, and drove them into pop infamy.  So how do we handle the now-confirmed case of Beyonce lip-synching America's National Anthem in front of millions, at an historic Inauguration ceremony to boot?

Unfortunately, this is now 'official official': Beyonce was not actually singing, according to word from an Inauguration official to CNN.  Earlier, the US Marine Band did their best to double-talk and protect the star singer, but unfortunately, they were being placed (or, agreeing to place themselves) in a very difficult position.  "She did not sing live," the official flatly shared, while pointing to anxiety over the possibility of a non-rehearsed, rushed performance in cold temperatures.

Something about the schedules, arriving late, being busy with Super Bowl halftime preparations, etc. "Because she didn't have time to rehearse with the Marine Band, she decided to use her recording with the Marine Band," the official added, while noting that Beyonce herself - and no one else - insisted on the arrangement.

It gets worse: because the Marine Band was actually playing, of course they know this tune by heart.  But they acquiesced to Beyonce and subsequently compromised their reputation by assisting a cover-up.  "Regarding Ms. Knowles-Carter's vocal performance," band spokesman Capt. Gregory Wolf stated earlier this week. "No one in the Marine Band is in a position to assess whether it was live or pre-recorded."

The Beyonce camp has yet to respond.  The Super Bowl halftime performance is scheduled for February 3rd.

Mrs. Carter a.k.a. Beyonce is held to an elite status of rules which only applies to a short list of entertainers. Her and her team have been aware of this dating back to her Destiny's Child days and is one of the major components of her success. She consistently and almost flawlessly conducts herself as entertainment royalty, which she is. Mr. Carter is of the same DNA. Do I think Beyonce should have lip-synced the National Anthem during a presidential inauguration or any event for that matter? No. However, I do think that if circumstance may have prevented her from singing live at the highest level then she made the correct business and creative decision in this highly attended and viewed event. Furthermore, do her actions or the actions of whoever truly made the final decision erase the fact that she is one of the greatest female entertainers of all times? I would hope not. She has proven throughout her career that she is vocally fit, physically beautiful, performance ready, and creatively capable, in any given situation. I say this and I rarely listen to or purchase Beyonce's music but I respect her entire body of work. The act of lip-syncing in this case does not appear to be deceptive or dishonest. She was selected for the honor of singing the National Anthem for a reason. Sometimes the best decisions are not the most popular decisions.

I agree, I think that Whitney Houston (R.I.P.), Mariah Carey, & Jennifer Hudson would all have made that decision if needed. But! I think once it hits the media that you lip-synced, you have to address it immediately and honestly then move on.
